The Institute provides an avenue of communication from membership to other Institutes and organisations.
As an associate member of the Confederation of British Metal Forming the Institute provides members with a link to the UK trade association for the metal forming industries.
Meeting like-minded people at the Institutes functions and events to share information on technical developments and market trends and making valuable contacts and friendships.

Membership Categories
FELLOW
Open to members who have been a member of the Institute for at least one year, have satisfied the Council that they have an established reputation in the practice and science of sheet metal engineering, and are at least 33 years of age, hold a degree, membership of a chartered engineering institution or equivalent, and have five years’ experience in a senior position or relevant responsibility OR being at least 40 years of age have been engaged in an important senior position and have an established reputation in the field of sheet metal engineering.
Fellows are entitled to user the designated abbreviation FISME after their names.
MEMBER
Membership is open to persons who have acquired competent knowledge in the science of sheet metal engineering, are at least 25 years of age, and have acquired a minimum of six years’ experience in a field relevant to the sheet metal industry.
Members are entitled to use the designated abbreviation MISME after their names.
STUDENT
An individual who is in full time education or on a training course and who would expect to qualify and apply for membership and is less than 25 years of age.
COMPANY
Corporate Membership is open to companies who are engaged in, or associated with, the sheet metal engineering industry.
